Project Description

United Way of Greater Milwaukee (UWGM) is an independently-governed 501(c)3 nonprofit organization connected to a network of more than 1,400 local United Ways through United Way Worldwide. United Way changes lives and improves our community by mobilizing people and resources to drive strategic impact in Education, Income and Health.

As UWGM began looking to replace its Nortel phone system, they wanted to implement a solution that delivered on the following goals:

  • Improved their data network infrastructure stability and speed
  • Allowed phones to be relocated as needed according to each new annual campaign
  • Reassignment of existing extensions to new volunteers quickly and easily
  • Increased carrier service capacity and redundancy while reducing monthly costs

DVI was able to implement a solution that delivered on all stated goals through the installation of a new IP-based Digium Switchvox phone system, new Gigabit data network, and new carrier services that reduced monthly costs by 28%.

To generate additional value for UWGM, DVI was able to include within its proposed solution for no additional cost:

  • Fax server licenses within the phone system that allowed UWGM to eliminate most of their fax machines (and their associated monthly costs)
  • DVI volunteered to upgrade the originally proposed Core switch (from a 48-port Layer 3; to a 144-port Layer 4) which provided UWGM greater growth and network routing capabilities.
  • The replacement of all CAT5e patch cords with new properly sized CAT6 patch cords within main data center. DVI also completed the patch cord installation using appropriate cable management to provide a clean and easily traceable patch cord infrastructure within the data center.

UWGM is one of DVI’s solution showcases and DVI serves as a member of United Way’s Technology Committee.
